“Position mode changed on the exchange”

A critical notification: while the bot was working, the position mode on Bybit changed, and the bot stopped trading.

What it means

The full text:

🚨 Position mode changed on the exchange

Grid bot #12 (BTCUSDT) has been paused.

Expected: One-Way Actual: Hedge

To resume the bot — change the position mode back in exchange settings, then unpause the bot. Otherwise all orders will be rejected with "position idx mismatch".

The bot notices the change at the next order placement and goes into a hard pause: the active grid orders are cancelled. The position, if there was one, stays open on the exchange. The notification arrives immediately, in any notification mode, even in “Errors only”.

Why it happens

  • The mode was switched by hand in the Bybit app.
  • The account is also used for manual trading, where Hedge was needed.
  • The mode was changed in another service working on the same keys.

What to do

  1. Open the message and look at the “Expected” line — usually it is One-Way.
  2. Bring that mode back on Bybit (“Position mode” → One-Way). The exchange may refuse to switch while there are orders or a position on the pair — in that case cancel the orders and close the position by hand first.
  3. Go back to the bot card and take the bot off pause: ▶️ Resume for Grid, ▶️ Start for DCA. Grid will place the grid orders again.
  4. If you take the bot off pause without bringing the mode back, the exchange will reject the orders and the bot will stop again.

To avoid a repeat, do not change the position mode on the account where Grid and DCA bots are running. For manual trading in Hedge, use a separate subaccount and separate keys.

When to contact support

If the mode on Bybit is One-Way and after ▶️ Resume the bot reports the mode change again — write to support: the bot number, the pair and a screenshot of the position mode settings.
